Nokia’s 5000 is the ‘high-end’ offering in its recent announcement of four new handsets targeted at the entry-level market. It’s a slightly beefed up alternative to its relatively low-spec cousins, and is based on the design of the excellent 5310 XpressMusic phone. Unfortunately it’s not nearly as capable, and notably omits the dedicated media keys on the exterior despite the fact that, unlike other phones in this new range, it does have a multimedia player that can handle MP3 files.

There’s only 12MB of built-in memory and no microSD card slot for increasing this though, so it appears to be a token effort. Elsewhere an FM radio, web browser and email client add some extra functionality, and the 1.3MP camera is considerably better than the VGA standard set by the other entry-level phones announced recently. There’s also a 2” 240×320 display, but only dual-band GSM, so it seems to be a bit of a case of teasing users with some promising features without really giving them the ability to make the most of them.
