LG joins the 3D HDTV fray

PETALING JAYA: LG has entered the local 3D HDTV fray with what it claims is the world’s first full LED TV series.

According to LG, the LED designation in its LX9500 Infinia series refers to the backlight system used to illuminate the LCD TVs and not the chips that produce the image content.

Currently, the two popular LED technologies are Full Array and Edge-Lit.

The former means that several series of LEDs (light emitting diodes) are placed behind the entire surface of the display while in Edge-Lit-based LCD TVs, they are located along the outside edges of the screen.

The major advantage of Full Array is its “local dimming” feature, which enables each LED or a specific group of LEDs, to be turned on and off independently within certain areas of the screen for better control of the brightness and darkness.

In short, it allows the TV to produce truer blacks and whites to deliver better pictures for the ultimate 3D experience, LG claimed.

The drawback is that most LCD TVs that employ this LED technology are usually thicker, but not so with the Infinia series.

It sports a slim profile that is a mere 22.3mm thick and this is further complemented by a 16mm super-narrow bezel.

This series also boasts a 10,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio to provide mesmerising pictures as well as TruMotion 400Hz (480Hz) refresh rate, which eliminates motion blur and improves picture quality at different viewing angles, LG said.

There is also the built-in Intelligent Sensor II to automatically adjust the picture brightness according to the surroundings.

Another interesting feature is the wireless AV link support, which allows users to hook it up to compatible LG devices wirelessly to access the stored media library.

The LX9500 also sports an “invisible” speaker design, where the entire front cabinet is turned into an invisible speaker system tuned by audio expert Mark Levinson.

Also available is a built-in USB 2.0 port for users to connect various USB storage devices and play HD DivX, MP3, JPEG and MPO files directly.

The LX9500 series is available in 47in and 55in screen sizes. Each model comes with two 3D shutter glasses, which can be recharged via the TV’s USB port.

The 47in and 55in models are priced at RM18,999 and RM23,999 respectively.
