1MALAYSIA HOSTEL: GOOD RACES INTEGRATION STUDENT HOSTEL

The proposed construction of a multiracial hostel by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to foster better racial integration among school students under the 1Malaysia spirit is welcomed by all parties. Malaysian Chinese Muslim Association vice-president Dr. Mohd Ridhuan Tee Abdullah said such a concept should be extended to existing hostels in secondary schools and public, as well as private institutions of higher learning. This would enable students to exchange views and to understand one another, including their way of life and culture, he said in a statement here today.

Ridhuan, who is also the president of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Bandar Baru Ampang Parents-Teachers Association, regarded the proposed setting up of a multiracial hostel would provide better understanding on Islam for the non-Muslims.

Malaysian Indian Youth Council president, A. Rajaretinam, when contacted, said the proposal should be supported by everybody. It should not be regarded as a Barisan Nasional project, but that of the country and which would benefit all the people, he added.

The head of Gerakan Central Bureau On Unity Dr. Asharuddin Ahmad said the government’s plan to set up a hostel in the Klang Valley for students of all races was a positive step towards national integration. He said such a move was also in line with the prime minister’s 1Malaysia vision for all the communities in the country to study and live together harmoniously without any hindrance.

After so many years of independence, we should not say that he is a Malay, Chinese, Indian or Dayak, we are all Malaysians ,” he said. When announcing this yesterday, Najib said the government was looking for a suitable site for the hostel, expected to be operational next year.
